How To Carry Out A Sash Cord Replacement
Traditional timber sash windows operate on weights, cords, and a pulley system. The cords allow the windows to be slid open, and the weight is balanced to keep them in place. However, as a moving part that is regularly in use and must withstand high levels of daily friction, the cords often snap. When this happens, it may become hard to open or close the sash window.
In this article, Rose Collection experts discuss sash window cord replacement. However, please note that replacing rope or cord in a traditional sash window can be done, but it is labour intensive and tricky. An experienced DIYer could attempt it, but it’s probably best to call in a professional.
REMOVING THE BROKEN SASH WINDOW CORD
To carry out a sash cord replacement, you will first need to remove the sash window. Using a chisel and mallet, carefully prise off the beading, trying not to damage the corners. Next, cut any parts of the unbroken cord to allow the window sash to be removed. Carefully remove the window and set it aside.
Once the window has been removed, you’ll have access to the pocket cover located on the side of the frame. Prise off the pocket cover using a chisel, lift out the weights and remove the old cord.
FINAL STEPS IN SASH WINDOW CORD REPLACEMENT
Retrieve the window sash and attach the new cord to the channel using nails. Rest the sash on the window’s frame and guide the new cord over the pulleys and into the window frame’s channel. Attach the new cord to the weights with a strong knot. Try opening and closing the window. If the sash weight hits the top of the channel when the window is fully closed, then the cord has been cut correctly.
Replace the pocket cover, and then reinstall the sash. Finally, nail the beading back in place, and the job’s done.
THE BENEFITS OF A SPRING BALANCE SYSTEM IN SASH WINDOWS
Especially if you have tried carrying out a sash cord replacement, and are tired of trying to repair traditional windows, our uPVC sash window replacements might be exactly what you need. Including Ultimate Rose, Charisma Rose, and Heritage Rose, our Rose Collection uPVC sash windows will provide you with a peace of mind.
The Rose Collection uPVC sash windows open and close using a torsion balance system, a popular alternative to the traditional weights and sash wind cords system. The spring system is concealed within the sash window frame and is easily accessible for maintenance or replacement.
A spring balance system has a much longer lifespan than a traditional cord system and provides a smooth opening and closing action every time. It is also much more cost effective without compromising on performance.
